Behind The Brand: Bayberry Embroidery
We love highlighting our brand partners and the incredible women behind them. Today, we are excited to introduce Zoe Maslen, Owner and Designer of Bayberry Embroidery! We partnered with Zoe to create our Songbird Cocktail Napkins that are hand-embroidered and designed exclusively for Hummingbird Home & Co.! We wanted to know a little more about Zoe, her incredible talent and what inspired her to start her company. Read on for the short Q & A about how she got started!
HH: We’re so thrilled to have you on the blog today! To get started, can you tell us a little about Bayberry Embroidery and what inspired you to start the brand?
ZM: I'm so excited to be here and work with Hummingbird Home & Co.! I started Bayberry Embroidery in early 2022 out of a love for making unique gifts for my family and friends. I've always loved embroidery, but it turned into something bigger when I got an embroidery machine for Christmas in 2021.
The name comes from Bayberry Road, the street where I spent summers at my grandparents' beach house. Each summer, I went to "Camp Grandma," where my grandma and I spent a week together doing crafts, walking on the beach, and watching movies together.
With Bayberry Embroidery, I hope to bring people a homey, nostalgic feeling, like my memories of Bayberry Road, in a modern way.
HH: Where are you based?
ZM: I'm based in Charleston, South Carolina.
HH: One of our favorite characteristics about your product is the exceptional quality and craftsmanship. Can you tell us a bit more about the process and how your pieces are made?
ZM: Each project I work on is unique, but the process is always collaborative. In the beginning, I'll chat with each client to understand more about what they're looking for, what colors and vibes they're going for, and if the piece is for a special occasion.
Then we'll work together on the design, fabric colors, and thread colors. We'll usually go back and forth making small (or big) changes!
When Ashley and I worked on a set of napkins, we worked closely to pick out the perfect color and size of linen, thread color, and design.
Then comes the stitching. I transfer the designs to my embroidery machine (I use a Baby Lock Enterprise), and the embroidery machine goes to work.
HH: What is it about your designs that make them so special?
ZM: Nothing makes me happier than when I capture what a client had in mind. Whether I'm working with a bride on her wedding linens, a shop on an exclusive design, or a new mom on a piece for a nursery, it's really important that each project represents the client and makes them feel good. The collaboration and personalization makes Bayberry Embroidery special!
HH: When you're not working on embroidery for Bayberry, what might we find you doing?
ZM: I absolutely love working on embroidery, so you'll actually find me designing or embroidering a lot of the time! But, outside of that, I've recently been planning my wedding (!!), exploring Charleston restaurants, hanging out with friends and family, or watching Bravo.
